Sometimes in life, there comes a moment when we must learn the art of letting go. Today, we bring you a poignant and heartwarming tale of Carlos Fresco and his faithful ten-year-old labradoodle, Monty. Tragically, for the past 18 months, Monty battled a relentless foe – leukemia. Carlos shared with Brecon’s Radnor, “I knew Monty was nearing the end as his cancer had returned. He was diagnosed 18 months ago and responded remarkably well to chemotherapy. But regrettably, his leukemia resurfaced eight weeks ago, and he declined rapidly.”

With time running short, Carlos decided that their farewell would be a final adventure. He took Monty to the summit of Pen y Fan in the Brecon Beacons of Wales, a place they had cherished together.

Carlos and Monty spent a week in Brecon, accompanied by friends, who helped transport Monty in a wheelbarrow on walks around the area. Carlos recounted, “He adored hill walks, and we improvised, taking him on journeys through these splendid beacons. Despite his frailty, he relished the attention and affection of the well-wishers they encountered. People on the hills were incredibly kind, deeply moved by Monty’s deteriorating condition. Complete strangers asked if they could share in pushing Monty on his final journey – many of them shed tears, for we all hold our four-legged friends so dear.”

Carlos expressed his gratitude, saying, “I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all of them for their support, encouragement, and genuine concern for Monty. That little guy touched so many lives. He made everyone he encountered smile and take a moment to appreciate that sometimes life isn’t all that bad. Our four-legged companions are never judgmental; they are always there, waiting for us, offering comfort when things don’t go well.”

Sadly, over the week, Monty’s health continued to decline, and on June 21st, he passed away. Carlos shared, “Monty peacefully left us at the foot of my bed on Monday morning, at the age of ten. He held on until Father’s Day and has now found peace.”
